July 30 Hiking in Rainier

How nice to sleep in, yet have such an early start to the day. We drove into Mt. Rainier Sunrise area this morning and began our hike before the ranger station even began. We hiked the Mt. Expensive (Fremont) as Ellis called it, based on a recommendation from our friends who had visited recently. The trail was incredible and I didn't want it to end. Beautiful blue sky, incredible views of Mt. Rainier, the valleys, glaciers, trees, and other peaks in the area. Visited the huge trees in the park, we were all very impressed. Kids were excited to swim at the wonderful resort we are staying. It was a great day.

Day 1

July 29, 2011

Early rise at 4:00 to catch our flight. Flight was smooth. Andrew and Ellis were invited into the cock pit by the pilot, and Andrew got to help him plot the course. Arrived in Seattle by 11:30 am. Drove toward Mt. Rainier and stopped in the town of Enumclaw for a wonderful lunch at the Panini Cafe. Loved the salad and panini – turkey, artichoke, and sundried tomato pesto (will remember it for a long time) and smore pie! The huge trees are incredible, but are a contrast to the logged areas on the mountains. We are staying at the Alta Crystal Mountain Resort tonight. Very beautiful. Kids swam in the warm pool. Enjoyed a beautiful hike behind the hike along Deep Creek. Tall trees, rocks, and many types of moss carpeted the area around the creek and rapids. We played badmitten after our hike. Are enjoying Tillamook cheese for a snack this evening. Andrew said this is exactly what he expected and Ellis says this is nothing like he expected.
